Charleston, South Carolina, is truly like stepping into a living, breathing history book with a dash of Southern sass. Whether you’re a travel junkie or a history nerd, Charleston’s got your back. Ready for an adventure? Let’s dive into the must-see sights and hidden gems of this enchanting Southern Belle.

1. Top 5 Historical Landmarks to Visit

Just like Savannah, Georgia (which I also adore), Charleston oozes history, with landmarks that whisper secrets of its storied past. Here are five historical sites you absolutely must visit:

Fort Sumter

Standing at the entrance to Charleston Harbor, the first shots of the American Civil War were fired on Fort Sumter against the Union Army. Visiting this historic site gives you a fascinating glimpse into our nation’s past. Our tour took off from Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant. We hopped on a quick boat ride across the harbor to reach the island where the historic fort awaited. It was kind of a blustery day when we went on the tour, which you can see exhibited in my husband’s hair-do to the right. But we still enjoyed the picture-perfect views of the water and landscape along the way. Once we arrived, we found out why the journey was worth the trip—as we explored the fort’s intriguing history and soaked in the jaw-dropping vistas of the entire harbor.

The Battery

This iconic stretch along the waterfront is lined with grand antebellum homes and provides stunning views of Charleston Harbor. It’s the perfect spot for a scenic stroll or a leisurely bike ride. The seawall, once Charleston’s armor against foes and battles, now makes for a delightful stroll. Walking on the battery, you can enjoy the view and imagine yourself a sentry with a latte.

Aiken-Rhett House

Step inside the Aiken-Rhett House to experience life as it was in the 19th century. Built around 1820, this meticulously preserved townhouse offers a delightful peek into Charleston’s rich history, all through the eyes of one of its prominent families. With period furnishings, original architecture, and detailed historical exhibits, it’s like hitting the rewind button to early 19th-century Charleston. A true gem, this place offers priceless insights into the city’s cultural and social heritage. Step in and time travel—no flux capacitor needed!

Pineapple Fountain

Nestled in the picturesque Riley Waterfront Park, the Pineapple Fountain is the epitome of Southern hospitality wrapped in elegance and tranquility. Its charming design and soothing water features make it the perfect photo op—or selfie spot if you’re so inclined. Over the years, we’ve collected countless snapshots of Emily and her friends splashing around in the fountain (yes, it’s totally allowed), often laughing and creating unforgettable moments. The surrounding area is just as inviting, with lush greenery and scenic waterfront views, making it the ideal backdrop for a leisurely stroll or an afternoon of relaxation. So, grab your camera and your sense of adventure; this spot is a must-visit!

Old City Market

Dating back to the 1790s, the Old City Market is Charleston’s buzzing bazaar, where you can snag local crafts, sweetgrass baskets, and one-of-a-kind souvenirs. It’s a lively spot that perfectly captures Charleston’s vibe. Some of my prized finds, like a sand dollar Christmas ornament and original Folly Island prints from a local artist, hail from this market. Bonus: The middle section is air-conditioned, offering a sweet escape from those sizzling Charleston summers!

2. Exploring Charleston’s Culinary Scene

Charleston’s culinary scene is a playground for foodies. Ready to tickle your taste buds with some Lowcountry deliciousness? Here are some must-try spots!

Seafood Delights

For seafood enthusiasts, Charleston is a paradise. Visit The Ordinary for fresh oysters, or enjoy a seafood platter at Fleet Landing, where you can dine with a view of the harbor.

Poe’s Tavern on Sullivan’s Island

Poe’s Tavern is named after author Edgar Allan Poe, who was stationed at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island. With its creative burger menu and literary-themed atmosphere, Poe’s Tavern offers a unique dining experience. It is always a must-go on our visits to the area.

As soon as you step into Poe’s Tavern, you are transported into a world of literature and food. The walls are adorned with quotes from Poe’s famous works, creating a cozy yet mysterious atmosphere. The menu is filled with creatively named burgers such as “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Raven,” each one paying homage to Poe’s dark tales.

But it’s not just the literary references that make this place special. The food itself is top-notch. From juicy burgers made with locally sourced beef to crispy hand-cut fries, every dish is crafted with care and attention to detail. And for those who don’t eat meat, there are also vegetarian options that are just as delicious.
